One of the most beneficial things you can do to position yourself for success with your physical fitness program is to adopt a growth mindset. A growth mindset means that you believe improvement is possible if you create an appropriate plan and execute it. It differs from a fixed mindset, which resolves itself to the idea that things are the way they are and oh well.

That fixed mindset thing… yowzah, no thanks. But a growth mindset, on the other hand, you can see why that is a better way your workout, not to mention life in general. We are going to explore how applying this type of thinking to your physical fitness can help you reach your goals.

Why Mindset Matters

Your mindset and attitude are extremely important to your success. You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right.” And it really applies here. Your outlook will move you forward or hold you back — it is up to you.

We all have times when we are not feeling motivated, and the temptation to skip the WOD is high. That is when having a growth mindset is most helpful. It ingrains the tenets of progress within your psyche to keep you going for the goal even after the temporary hurrah has faded.

Really, it is about believing in yourself, your abilities, and keeping your true goals and desires at the forefront of your focus — and taking the action steps to make them a reality.

How to Develop a Growth Mindset Around Fitness

There are many ways to apply a growth mindset to your fitness routine, and the following are a select few that we have found helpful.

Focus on regular improvement. Set goals for yourself and work toward achieving them — and then set new goals.

Cultivate a sense of grit. Persistence, ambition, and tenacity will take you far in your workouts. When you reach a new milestone, it becomes much easier to do it again.

Let go of all fears of failure and embrace new opportunities and challenges as a means to grow.

Embrace the process as a journey and realize you will only move forward when you take steps. So come to the box, do your WOD, and do it often.
