By Alan Shaw, Co-Founder and Head Coach of Rhapsody Fitness in Charleston, SC
I see it everyday at the whiteboard – talking through the workout while someone steals a glance at the leaderboard or locks eyes with their WODwife before mouthing, “what are you doing?”
“Write your own story.” Delivered by Captain Hook, it’s one of the most powerful, poignant lines from the beloved Finding Neverland. First hearing it when I was younger, I didn’t fully understand or appreciate it until I became a coach, of all things.
Guidance is good. Delivering prime coaching is at the core of everything we do here at Rhapsody Fitness. But, after learning the ropes and finding your feet, each and every one of us gets to choose our own adventure – decide where we want to focus and what we want to accomplish.
These individual choices become steps and steps become success. Conversely, if these decisions aren’t made by you and for you, they simply won’t have staying power.
You will have to put in the work day in and day out to get to where you want to go – if your walk isn’t your own, you will quickly lose both direction and drive. Mark my words.
WALK YOUR OWN
How do you know if you’re going your own way? And the path ahead is not the product of (friendly) competition, external pressure or the dreaded “shoulds”… Ask yourself, do you wake up motivated to tackle it? Are you hungry for it? Does it make you happy? Do you want to grow and evolve it?
If your answer is “hell yes!” to the above, then proceed to setting goals for yourself with the big three:
- Define what you want – be clear, be specific and make sure it aligns with what makes you happy and adds value to your life.
- Create a plan – outline actionable, tangible steps to get you to your goal and that they make sense for you. All roads to greatness start with step one.
- Buy in – believe each and every day, you’re going all in on this because it’s yours and yours alone.
Writing your own story holds true far beyond Rhapsody. Although owning your walk may start here, it will take you far past the four walls of our gym in Charleston
Ready to own it? Let’s go! Let some Rhapsody into your life today.
