On the surface, fitness tends to be all about physical appearance. You see someone with a six-pack and assume that they must be fit. But is a six-pack really the threshold for fitness? Are you only “fit enough” if you have great abs?
When are you fit enough?
Well, the short answer is, it depends. But let’s dig a little deeper.
If you’re reading this, you probably have one or two personal fitness or performance goals that you’re working toward. You want to improve and get better, and your training makes it possible to achieve your goals.
Let’s say your goal is to back squat two-times your bodyweight. Are you fit enough right now to lift that much? Perhaps not, but you could get there.
Or maybe you want to run a marathon. Are you fit enough right now to run 26.2 miles? Not yet? No problem.
Your personal fitness goal might be to live a long and healthy life. Do you have areas for improvement? Probably.
“Fit enough” is all about functionality.
You know you’re fit enough when you can do the things at the gym and in your daily life that facilitate your goals and the life you want to lead.
For some people, that might mean working toward the back squat PR or marathon. For others, fit enough might look like:
- A consistent workout routine.
- Chasing your kids or your dog around the yard without getting winded.
- Choosing to take the stairs.
- Handling a variety of activities – weekend hikes, pick-up basketball games, full nights of dancing, etc.
- Getting good recovery and decent sleep.
Being fit enough is more than hitting a number on the scale or your body fat percentage. You know you’re fit enough when you’re able to do the activities you want, and you feel good while doing them.
